Shelley's 2nd painting

Ok,

I hope everybody had a great holiday weekend.

I got a lot of work done on Shelley's big painting. For her second painting, Shelley really liked a certain style I do, so we decided to do one of those for her. After I primed the canvas, I drew out a bunch of different block shapes. I paint all the different shapes black, gold, red and yellow. I wanted a lot of texture in every block, so I mixed a combination of saw dust, modeling paste and paint and applied a heavy amount inside of each block.
What's nice is, I just got through doing 3 of the same style paintings about a month a go, so I had little practice. I figured out a lot of little tricks to speed things up on those first 3 paintings. The very first one I did, took me forever, the second one, took a little less time, and so on and so on. So, I pretty much knew how to make everything look right without having to go through a bunch of hassle. On Shelley’s first painting, I used a special gold paint, red and yellow. So, I used the same gold paint and other colors on her second painting. I wanted to make sure that both paintings work really well together.

I pretty much have the whole painting done already, but I didn’t take pics of the finished painting yet. I still have to frame it and do a bunch of touch up. I'll post the pics of the finished painting soon.

I forgot my camera at work, so I’ll the pics are from my cell, sorry.

Hello again,

I hope everybody had a great weekend.

So, it's been awhile since my last update, I finding out that it's a lot harder to keep up with this blog, than I thought lol.

Anyway, I wanted to finish the blog for this painting. I finished the painting and brought it to Shelley, she loved it, but after looking at it, she noticed that the red color was a little pinkish. She wanted the red color to match the red in her first painting, plus, she has a few other pieces of art in her house that are what I call...a true red too. When i got the painting home, I could totally see what she was talking about. So, I started redoing the red part, but had to pretty much redo most of the painting. You can't just redo the red part on this type of painting, it's a little harder than that. I brought it back to Shelley after i got everything right. This time, I knew I had the color of red she was looking for, and, of course i was right lol. She saw the new red color and was very happy with the painting. The first pic you see below, is before I repainted it. The second one shows the finished painting with the new red color.

I want to thank Shelley again for letting do these paintings for her. I love how both of them turned out and they were a lot of fun to paint. Thank you Shelly.

Shelley sent me a picture with both of her paintings up. This is what being an artist is all about. How cool is it to see somebody's livingroom with your paitnigs on the wall? Too cool.

The pic was a little out of focus, so I doctored it up a bit, but they still look cool to me.

Shelley Paintings

Hi,

I started a new painting Sunday night. I mentioned last week, a friend at work (Shelley) wants me to do 2 paintings for her. I’m very excited to do both, of course, but I’m really looking forward to painting the smaller one. She wants one large painting (50" X 48") for over her couch and one smaller painting (24" X 48") for her fireplace.

When I first started painting, one of the first real paintings I did, was a cool swirl pattern. I added a couple of pics to show the paintings, I'm talking about. I'm not sure where this swirl thing came from, but it must be from my childhood. The first two swirl paintings I did, I sold on EBay. It’s been a couple of years since I painted a swirl painting, so that’s why I’m really looking forward to doing this painting first. Shelly wants a gold background with a bunch of different color swirls. We’ll talk about the 2nd painting later. After priming the painting, I sat down and did a few drawings, just trying to get a feel for what the painting will look like. I finally decided to go with one of my drawings. I added some pics to show the progress, so far.

The pics below is Shelleys new painting, well, the start of it.

Seeya,
Clint

Hello,

Ok, I got a lot of work done in the last 2 days, but I don’t think you’ll notice from the pictures.

A couple things…First, I remembered one thing about this type of painting; you have to do what I call, the round and round. What I mean by that is, you fix one thing and that mess’s up the other thing, then you fix that, and you mess up the other parts. So, you have to go round and round until you narrow all the problems down.

Second, the painting was way too slick, smooth or whatever you want to call it. And, it didn’t have much warmth to it, so I added a bunch of thick paint to the swirls, and I started adding some shading to the area’s between the swirls. Basically, I’m kind of messing it all up, but in a good way. I also added a ton of gold paint between the swirls to create some texture.

Third, I did something really stupid at the beginning, instead of drawing the whole swirl; I just did a one line swirl then went back and drew in the rest of the swirls, bad idea. Sad thing is, I know not to do that, but I forgot since I haven’t done one of these in few years. What happens is, you have to block all that stuff out that you don’t like with paint, that’s why I had to paint the yellow swirl, green, then white, and then yellow again, just to get rid of the black lines I didn’t want. I kept thinking if I just add enough yellow, I wouldn’t be able to see the black lines I didn’t want, WRONG. I also added a few different colors to the lower swirls to give it a better look.

More on the shading between the swirls, it doesn't look that good at this point, but after I go back over the shaded areas with the gold paint, it will look better.

One last thing, this type of painting always looks bad until the very end. After I get the swirls shapes, the shading between the swirls and all the different colors just right, then I'll clean everything up with some black out lines around the swirls.

I hoping I get the whole painting part done by Sunday afternoon, so I can frame it Sunday night. Hopefully, the whole painting will be done by Wednesday, so I can start working on the larger painting.

The pics I'm posting were taking with my cell so there not that great.

Hello,

I got a lot done over the weekend on Shelley's small paintimg. The painting is all framed now, so I'll have to do is get the swirls looking right and I can start on the next painting. Here's a few pics to show the progress. Hopefully, I'll be able to finish it tonight, but I'm not sure.

Hello everybody,

I hope everybody had a great weekend.

Sorry, I didn’t update much last week. But, I got a lot of work done on Shelley’s small, swirl painting.

I was talking about putting some black, shading in between the swirls last week, but for some reason it just didn’t work on this painting. The shading actually made the painting look a little dirty. I went back over the shaded areas with some gold paint and cleaned it up. What’s weird is, I always do a little shading on my swirl paintings, it adds depth and warmth, but it just didn’t work on this one. I forgot how much work one of these swirl paintings can be, I did the old around and around so many times, it about drove me crazy. One of the things people have gotten use to, is, seeing designs that are generated from the computer. You know, exactly perfect looking lines and thing is just perfect, I hate that crap. No feel, no warmth, no mistakes, that’s not art, that’s just some perfect looking crap created by a computer. One of the things I really like about this painting is how all the different colors work with the gold paint. The yellow, green and red colors work so well with the gold paint. You’ll notice I created a bunch of texture with the gold paint. This brings up another point; I don’t like my paintings to be too smooth. When you see one of my paintings, you know it’s a painting and not some copy of a picture. Basically, I break every rule there is when it comes to painting. I’ve never been to art school, but I’m sure they would tell me stuff like…you’re over painting, you could make it look smoother by applying paint this way or that way, get out of here with that crap. I want to know its painting; I want to see some mistakes, texture and thick paint. I want to feel the painting, I like to put my hands on it and feel all the paint on the canvas. Here’s some pics showing the finished painting.

Ok, on to the next painting. This next one should be fun, will see lol.

New painting for Torq Lite

Hello,

First, I have to thank my new friend, Jordan, for giving me the idea to start a blog. Jordan works for a company named Torq Lite; she hired me to do a painting for their front lobby. I started the painting on 3/24 and worked on it, all weekend. Jordan is a big fan of Jackson Pollock’s work and wanted a painting similar to his style, which is splash and drip art. We also discussed how big she wanted the painting (54" X 44") and what colors she thought would go good in the lobby. She also wanted the painting with a lot of texture and very thick paint. I took some pics over the weekend to show how things are coming along so far. The first pic just shows the canvas being primed. The 2nd pic shows me adding texture to the painting. It's a special sculpting paste I use to create texture. The painting is going to be above a navy blue couch, so I decided to make most of the painting yellow and dark blue. I'll keep updating the blog to show you the progress.

Since most of the painting is going to be yellow and dark blue I added some yellow for the back ground.

Ok, lets get going here, color, color, and some more color. This is just the first couple of layers of paint. I can already tell this going to be the most paint I've ever used on a painting. Over the weekend, I kept added more and more layers of paint. Somebody asked me one time...how do you know when to stop adding paint when you do a painting like this? The answer, I have no idea, but when my brain tells me that's it, that's it.

I don't want to show too much of the painting, at this point, but here's one last pic.

Wow! What a frustrating night of painting. I found out how cool this blog is yesterday, after Jordan read and looked at my blog, she noticed that the blue I was using so far was not dark enough and needed to be more navy blue, which is the color the company uses on their website, plus the couch that the painting is going over is navy blue. So, I got home at 5:00 yesterday, I started washing out some of the blue I already used by adding some more white. After I got most of the blue out, I noticed that I was going to have to pretty much start all over because it just didn’t look right. After couple hours of layering again, I had the painting almost exactly the way I wanted, then my eye caught something I didn’t like. I should have let it go, nobody in the world would have known, but I just couldn’t let it go. I thought no problem; I’ll just fix this one part real quick. Sometimes, being a perfectionist can be a real pain in the ass lol. After trying to fix this one little thing, I messed it all up. At this point, I started saying a bunch of really bad words and getting really pissed off. I had to take a deep breath, step back for a few minutes and calm down. After taking a break and recomposing myself, I went at it again. By this time, I had a hell of a mess; there was paint all over my dining room area where I paint, not to mention all over me. I kept working on it, adding the new navy blue, more yellow and white. Even know, most of the painting is yellow, navy blue and white, there’s a bunch of other colors too. By 10:00, I had it to a point where I could quit for the night. I woke up this morning and looked at it, it was worth all the work the painting is 90% finished, I just have a few things left and I can start building the frame. Hopefully tonight will go a lot better lol. Here’s a few pics I took last night.

I’m back,

Before I get going on the painting, I wanted to talk a little bit about this style of painting. You know, everybody looks at this kind of painting and thinks…Oh that’s easy, all you have to do is throw a bunch of paint on a canvas and WHOA LA!. Well, let me tell you, it’s anything but that. To be honest, this kind of painting gives me the most stress out of any paintings; it’s so damn hard to get everything looking just right. The amount of paint on one of these paintings is equal to 3 or 4 paintings. Another thing, it’s really easy to go too far, like I did Tuesday night. Once that happens, you pretty much have to start over again, to a certain degree.

Ok, I had to regroup after Tuesday night. I Woke up Wednesday morning feeling very sore, like I haven’t worked out in a long time lol. The one thing I noticed Wednesday night, the painting got too cluttered. I got a little carried away with the navy blue sprinkle, so I needed to clean it up a bit. I decided to add some big chunks of thick paint to wash away some of the navy blue sprinkle.

One thing I forgot to mention, Jordan said she didn’t want paint on every inch of the painting (which it’s not, but pretty close), and that’s kind of hard when you’re doing a painting like this. So, the secret is, to make it look like it doesn’t have paint on every inch. I also wanted to discuss some my secrets to making thick paint. To make a very thick paint, I add saw dust (I do a little trick to make the saw dust into a fine powder), sculpting paste and another thing I won’t mention hehe, this makes really beautiful, shinny, think paint. Even after it dries, it still looks a little wet.

I also have another thing I like to do to make the deep layers in the back of the painting POP, but I can’t go into details about that, incase another artist reads this lol.

Well, Last night after working on it for several hours, my brain finally said “That’s it” So, I’m finished, YEA!!! It was a ton of work, but the most fun work I’ve ever done. This is by far the best, most interesting and beautiful Jackson Pollock style painting I’ve ever done. I just hope Jordan likes it as much as I do.

Here’s a few pics, I don’t want to show the whole painting until Jordan gets to see it. I’ll post some pics of the finished painting later.

Hey, thanks for taking the time to read this, I hope everybody enjoyed seeing the process.

On to the next painting, a friend of mine at work wants me to do two paintings for her. One of the paintings is going over her couch and the other one, by the fireplace.

Hello,

Ok, I finished up the Torq Lite painting for Jordan over the weekend. I had to build the frame and stretch the canvas. I had a few problems with the frame, but nothing too bad, just had to keep working with it until I got it right. I told Jordan I would bring the painting to her Monday, so I loaded up the painting and took it over to Torq Lite. I was pretty stressed out because I didn’t know if Jordan would like it or not. I always stress out when I’m taking a new painting to somebody lol. But, everything went really well, Jordan absolutely loved it, YEA!!! It’s so nice when you paint something for somebody and they love it. It makes all the hard work, worth it. Jordan is going to take some pictures of it with her good camera; I can’t wait to see the pictures. It’s going to look so good above the navy blue couch. I took some pics for everybody to see the finished painting. I really love how yellow works with navy blue, there’s just something about those two colors together. I want to thank Jordan million times for giving me the opportunity, thank you so much.

Take care,

Awesome piece for sale!

Painting sixe: 48" x 32"

What's really cool about this painting is...I used this really cool gold paint. When the gold paint drys, it
looks like gold metal, it's really cool when the sun shines on it during the day. At night, the painting just has this amazing warm feel to it. The painting is on canvas, with 100% arcylic paint.
$175.00.
